Meta shows fewer installs than the MMP

Meta reporting fewer installs than your MMP usually points to set-up, not attribution. Check the SDK, app ID, ad account link and AEM events in that order.

SymptomYour MMP credits more installs to Meta than Ads Manager reports, sometimes with Meta showing zero.
Most likely causeMeta is not receiving install events correctly, usually because of a Facebook SDK or app ID problem or an app not connected to the ad account.
First checkOpen Events Manager and confirm that install events are arriving under the same app ID used in Ads Manager.

Short answer: when Meta shows fewer installs than your MMP, the usual cause is that Meta is not receiving install events properly. Check the Facebook SDK or server integration, the app ID and the link between the app and the ad account.

Why fewer installs in Meta is a set-up signal

Meta can only credit installs it hears about. Its developer docs say that when Meta shows fewer installs than an MMP, the Facebook SDK integration and the app ID are the first things to check.

Events Manager vs Ads Manager: Events Manager shows most events Meta receives, while Ads Manager shows only the events attributed to ads. Comparing the two tells you whether events are missing or just unattributed.

Why does Meta show zero installs when my MMP shows some?

Meta's help centre says the install metric needs the app registered with Meta, the SDK implemented correctly and the app connected to the ad account. Without that, the ad optimises for link clicks and installs show as zero.

Likely causes

  • Facebook SDK or server events misconfigured. Missing or broken install events mean Meta has nothing to attribute.
  • Wrong app ID. Events arrive under a different app from the one in Ads Manager.
  • App not connected to the ad account. The campaign then optimises for link clicks.
  • Events not eligible for AEM on iOS. Meta lists ineligible events among the reasons iOS results differ, and AEM allows 8 prioritised events.
  • Shorter Meta window. If the ad set setting is shorter than your MMP's Meta window, the MMP keeps installs that Meta drops. See the attribution windows guide.

How to confirm it

  1. Open Events Manager and look for recent install events from the app.
  2. Check that the app ID in your SDK or server integration matches the app in Ads Manager.
  3. In Meta for Developers, confirm the app is registered and connected to the ad account running the campaign.
  4. For iOS campaigns, check which events are configured and prioritised for AEM.
  5. Compare the ad set attribution setting with the Meta window in your MMP.

How to fix it

  1. Correct the app ID and redeploy the SDK, or send installs server-side with one install per user, as Meta's App Events API advises.
  2. Register the app and connect it to the ad account, then relaunch affected campaigns.
  3. Prioritise the events you optimise for within the AEM limit.
  4. Align attribution windows between Meta and your MMP.

FAQ

Common questions

Why would my MMP credit Meta with more installs than Meta does?

Usually because Meta is not receiving the install events or cannot tie them to the ad account. A shorter Meta window or AEM limits on iOS can also leave Meta lower.

What should I check first?

Events Manager. If install events are not arriving, or arrive under the wrong app ID, nothing else matters until that is fixed.

Can I send installs to Meta from my server?

Yes. Meta's App Events API accepts server-side install events, and it asks you to report only one install per user so installs are not counted twice.

Does this affect campaign optimisation?

Yes. If Meta cannot see installs, its delivery system has less signal to optimise on, so fixing set-up can change performance as well as reporting.

What is mobile attribution?

Mobile attribution is the process of crediting each app install or in-app event to the ad, link or channel that drove it. A mobile measurement partner (MMP) does this across all your channels so each install is counted once.

Why do ad networks report more installs than my MMP?

Each network counts every install it touched within its own windows, including views, while an MMP gives each install to a single source. Adding the networks' numbers together therefore overstates real installs.
